Photographed:Lafayette Square Fountain
The historically significant and eternally beautiful Lafayette Square is home to the famous Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and its landmark twin steeples, designed by architect Francis Baldwin. Famed author Flannery O’Connor’s childhood home is also here, along with the Andrew Low House, the Hamilton-Turner Inn, and the William Battersby House all calling Lafayette Square home. The square was laid out in 1837 and named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French general under George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. The centerpiece of the square is the fountain that the Colonial Dames of America presented to the city to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Savannah’s founding.
